Dr. Tareef Hayat Khan is an Architect and Academician currently teaching at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) at Texas, USA. He received his Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Masters in Architecture (M.Arch), followed by Masters in Artificial Intelligence (M.A.I) from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KULeuven), Belgium. He received his PhD in Architecture from The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He worked with several notable Architects in Bangladesh namely Rafiul Alam, Saiful Haque, Abu Hena Ziauddin, Rashidul Hasan, Md Ansar Hossain, Professor Abdullah Kiwan, and Helaluddin Ahmed on different projects in Bangladesh, and with Architect Mazlin Ghazali in Malaysia. He taught as a full-time faculty member in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia), Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (Bangladesh), and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong) before joining PVAMU. He was a visiting lecturer in The University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), and in Zheijiang University, Hang Zhou, China.
He showed his early promises when he received 'Chancellor Award' in 1986 for securing Ninth position in the combined merit list in the Higher Secondary Examination (A level equivalent) in Dhaka Board, Bangladesh. He carried on his pursuit of knowledge for the next two decades in the form of higher education and teaching.
His research on housing transformation was reflected in his first book ‘Living in Transformation’ published in 2013. It was followed by his second book 'Houses in Transformation', published in the same year. 'Retrofitting Backlanes' is his later research-based book on Malaysian Terrace Row Housing Estates, published in 2015. Several other books are in production both as writer and Editor. Besides, he has some useful publications in different journals. Other than Housing, his research interests also include Student’s Learning Styles, Morality, as well as some research in Music, and Bangla language.
He is the eldest son of Mobarak Hossain Khan, a former Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (National Academy of fine and performing arts) and the former Chairman of the Trustee Board of Nazrul Institute, and Highest National Award winning renowned Musicologist of Bangladesh; and Fauzia Yasmin, a renowned vocal artiste in Bangladesh, and Professor in Bangla Literature. He is the grandson of Ustad Ayet Ali Khan, a prominent Surbahar player of Bangladesh.
